Hi Pamela,
We were on a similar journey. we started at 1 1/2 with early intervention and made no progress in over 6 months. None. Once we started Kaufman and really working on OT in conjunction with speech we started to have breakthroughs. I’m not sure where you are located but if you have gone that long without much progress you might want to consider changing SLPS or pushing back on your current one more if you haven’t already. I know it can be hard to find SLPs trained specifically for apraxia, but that is really what is needed to make progress. This is a good place to start:

Prompt is great too, some work better with prompt than Kaufman and vice versa, but I find they worked well together too. Good luck!

Hi Pamela, If you aren’t familiar with Kaufman method, check out her website. Attached is a link to videos showing how her therapy works. Look through the whole site, it’s extremely helpful. Also you can send a video to Nancy and she will review it personally for $80 and give recommendations to you and even speak with your current SLP. This is extremely helpful and you don’t need to commit to seeing her for a visit or anything to do this. Here is the link:

Oh wow, so sweet of you to do this. My son turned 4 a month ago and has made a lot of progress with his PROMPT therapist. I haven’t heard of these cards and would love to try them. Thank you!!

Hi, you are very generous to be giving away your set to someone that needs it. My son Tyler is 3 and has apraxia. We have been struggling to try to get some more sounds and words from him. He has been in therapy for speech since he was 1 and a 1/2. He has made no progress . Every time we think we may be getting somewhere we end up taking 3 steps back a week later. Its so hard having a 3 yr old with only 4 words. He is constantly frustrated since he knows what he wants but we don’t.The speech therapist at school refuse to try a different strategy with him. The only recommendation I get is to go buy an iPad which we can’t afford. I have been reading a lot about these Kauffman cards and the reviews are great. I would love to be able to give these a try with him. My biggest fear is that he’ll never really be able to talk.

Linda I would love any help with appeal letters and supporting documents! Cigna has paid for nothing thus far– it’s ridiculous how much they give me the run around! My email address is katepeden@yahoo.com. My daughter has epilepsy and apraxia! Seems common that kids with seizures also have apraxia.

Have you appealed with Cigna? I did win my first 2 or 3 appeals and had services for a while at least until he turned 3. If you need help with appeals (like the letter writing and supporting documents) let me know because there is someone I can connect you with that helped me so much. I say fight it! :) Good luck

Hi Kate, I totally understand the worrying, it seems impossible not to. So I know in some way telling you not to worry is a little pointless. But I will say, I recently read back on my earlier posts and the pain and the worry were so evident. I wish I could go back and tell myself everything was going to be totally fine. Harper will be fine too, try so very hard not to worry and let it consume you and enjoy her. Good luck, I’d love it if you kept me posted

I feel this way about Cigna. I’ve heard bcbs is better about covering for apraxia– but maybe not since you got denied. I hate insurance companies! Cigna so far is telling me my daughters therapy is not a covered benefit because its a short term rehab in the same category as chiropractic care. Ugh!

My daughter Harper has apraxia. I often wonder if she will ever be able to communicate like her peers. I know she will, but I just worry.

My daughter is 2.5 and has been seeing an SLP for 3 months. Insurance only covers one 30 min session and I try my best to “copy” the activities at home. My daughter isn’t saying any words yet but she is finding her voice. Thank you for doing this and I hope the winner will pay it forward as well!

My middle child turned 2 the beginning of February. We have been working with birth to 3 since August 2012. She is was diagnosed as severely apraxic. She uses ba, and ma for just about everything. I have been wanting to try the Kaufman cards. We are at a Stand still right now and could use any help. I came across your post in the apraxia Facebook page and read lots of your blog posts and its really helpful. Thanks so much for offering the others the Opportunity to be able to get these!
